Happy National Cheesecake Day! A day to celebrate and enjoy an extremely sweet and rich dessert! Cheesecake also has a rich history. It has been found that a forerunner of cheesecake can be dated back to Greece, where it was served at the first Olympics and even bride and grooms used it as a wedding cake. However, the recipe only called for cheese, flour, wheat, and honey. And when the Romans conquered they added eggs. As time when on and the expansion of Europe, the Europeans began to experiment and add their own spin to the recipe. The cheesecake was actually included in the first published cookbook. The recipe began to be altered and yeast was soon replaced by beaten eggs, which made it taste sweeter by cutting out the yeast. It wasn’t until after 1872, that cream cheese was incorporated, because that’s when the process of making cream cheese was discovered by a New York Dairy farmer.
From there, cheesecakes were devoured and beloved throughout the country. There are a vast amount of recipes for cheesecakes and also types.
New York Style Cheesecake is the simple cheesecake with absolutely no topping. Just a rich and creamy slice. This signature style requires extra egg yolks added to the recipe.
Philadelphia cheesecakes are much lighter and definitely has any kind of topping you want!
Chicago cheesecake uses sour cream in their recipe.
Even St. Louis has a type of cheesecake where they add a layer of gooey butter cake.
Cheesecakes aren’t always sweet. There are recipes that call for seafood or spicy peppers. But here are some sweet ones!!!
