August 25th: National Banana Split Day

20130824_175652-kdcollage

Happy National Banana Split Day!!!! The original epic sundae. The banana split has a very controversial history. The debate is between two towns; Latrobe, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Ohio.

Latrobe’s story is that a young pharmacist made a triple scoop banana ice cream sundae in 1904. However, three years later in Wilmington, Ohio a restaurant owner held a competition among his employees to develop a sundae that would attract customers in the harsh winter they were having. Ernest Hazard developed a sundae that became the famous banana split. It called for three scoops of ice cream with a split banana on the sides then a shot of chocolate syrup, strawberry jam, and pineapple bits, all topped with whipped cream and cherries. Now every year in June, Wilmington hold a banana split festival to commemorate their role in ice cream history.

Banana splits are a lot of fun to make at work. But it is a bit of a pain to order. I always feel like I am interrogating a customer when I have to ask all these questions for a banana split. Hard or soft ice cream? Nuts? The regular toppings of strawberry, chocolate, and pineapple? By the last question the customer is bobbing their head with you haha

So go out and celebrate today by making your own banana split at home or go order one! If you don’t get a banana with your split… I apologize. It wouldn’t be the first time we forgot to add that…

August 22nd: National Eat a Peach Day

“Ever been to Rome, Georgia, picked peaches off the tree?”

Happy National Eat a Peach Day!!! What a great way to celebrate Peach Month. I have actually been to Rome, Georgia… but we bought our peaches from Wal-Mart… because we didn’t have time to stay long and find another place. They were the best peaches I’ve ever had. Super juicy. And the perfect sweetness. Mmm…

Now, if you have read my previous posts, then you know that I LOVE peach flavored everything. The one thing I loved when I worked at Bath & Body Works was all of the peach scented things. Especially the candles. But aside from the amazing aroma of peaches, the taste is enjoyed in many many many ways. You know I love my ice cream, but here are other ways to enjoy this amazing fruit.

August 18th: National Soft Ice Cream Day

PhotoGrid_1376842974555

Happy National Soft Ice Cream Day!!! Always celebrated on a Sunday in August, Soft Ice Cream Day is dedicated to the invention of a beloved frozen treat. Ever wondered how the soft serve was made? I always did too. After about seven years working in an ice cream shop, I finally got the gist of it when I was able to help clean the big machines. The ice cream mix always came in cartons pre-made and we would pour them in the compartments in the tops of the machines. But then it would come out in a nice consistency ready to serve. What, may I ask, is inside this contraption that makes it not too cold but not too soft and the perfect consistency? Well, inside there are two cylindrical blades that churn the liquid mix at a freezing temperature (like around 32-36 degrees) while air is also being pumped in. I feel like there is more to that… but that is seriously the gist of it.

We have three different machines at B&F. The regular soft serve of chocolate and vanilla, the big machine. Then there are two twin machines, one is yogurt and the other is our non-dairy Dole. The vanilla and chocolate come already pre-made in cartons from Upstate Farms. Then the yogurt only comes in Vanilla from Upstate Farms, and then we add a shot of flavoring to the the vanilla to create the complimentary flavor. The choosing of the flavor is actually pretty difficult. Out of the 24 soft flavors that we have, we have to choose the right one because the color begins to fade after a while and therefore when it is twisted with the vanilla, you can’t really see it.

Then there is our Dole. This is actually the most complicated preparation out of the three. We have a 3 gallon bucket, that mainly lets out mix 2 gallons safely. We fill the bucket with one gallon of luke warm water, and then add the Dole powered mix. We stir it so it dissolves, then fill the rest up to the 2 gallon mark with really cold water. Then stir again and pour into the machine. It sounds complicated and time consuming, but you get pretty fast at it.

For our regular soft serve flavors, we have containers and a machine that we use. The containers are filled with the appropriate serving of vanilla ice cream, then we add our flavoring and mix it up in this mixing machine. Then on the other side of the machine there is a place to set the container down and then pull a lever that pushes the ice cream out of the container and you swirl it on the cone. People watch us like hawks through the windows when we make these. Then they are like “That’s how you make those!?”

We don’t have the flavor bursts. Which is the thin lines of flavoring that are on the edges of the ice cream. To make those, there is a machine that connects to the big machine and pumps it on the ice cream.

I love the soft serve machines. Unless there is an air bubble… beware of that shit. It makes a loud popping/gasping for air sound and spits out at a high speed. But I can make about 4 kid cones one one hand or two small cones on one hand. It is a talent that we learn lol. I was trained by the best 🙂

So go get some soft serve ice cream today! It is still summer!

Also. Frozen custard is different from soft serve. It is frozen much the same way, but in the custard there are egg yolks. Just to clear that up lol

August 14th: National Creamsicle Day

PhotoGrid_1376449064377

Happy National Creamsicle Day! Ice cream season is still in full swing, and today celebrate one of the most popular Popsicles out there! The Creamsicle!!!! Made of a creamy vanilla ice cream center and a fruity coating, creamsicles are most commonly made with an orange juice flavor coating.

Frank Epperson is widely recognized as the inventor of the popsicle. Having left a soda mixture outside in the winter one night with a string in it, and then found it frozen the next morning calling it the “Eppsicle”. That was in 1905, and in 1925 he sold the patented Eppsicle, which the name was changed to Popsicle by then, to a company in New York. From there the frozen treat gained traction and popularity soared. Today, well over hundreds of millions of creamsicles are consumed in the United States alone each year.

Epperson

Creamsicles, to me, are the perfect summer treat. It has the combination of fruity sherbet and and creamy ice cream. But I also think that it is the perfect treat all year long. Like when you are sick of winter and just want the summer months to be here already, creamsicles tend to take care of that crave.

At B&F right now we have the Dole orange and vanilla twist! It is soooo good! For those who are unsure of what Dole ice cream is, it is basically lactose free ice cream. It is made with a water base, and it kind of has a sherbet texture to it. But the twist is always the best!

August 10th: National S’mores Day

PhotoGrid_1376096330441

Happy National S’mores Day!!!! If this doesn’t make me want to go camping even more, I don’t know what will. S’mores are one of the easiest summer treats to make. Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. That is all that needs to be said! Also a plus… campfire.

The history of S’mores isn’t exactly conclusive. There isn’t much on how these snacks came into existence and how they became such a staple in our culture. However, the start of the mass production of marshmallows probably helped just a little bit 😉

At B&F Ice Cream, we have a S’mores Sundae, which is usually vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, marshmallow topping, and graham crackers. It really is delicious. Sweet… but delicious. Today, you can basically take a different spin on the traditional S’mores and make anything! S’mores pizza, S’mores Martini, S’mores cupcakes, ANYTHING!!!!

Summery Smores Treats- perfect summer snack! What if…: replace choc with craisens or dried blueberries.

Omg these were the best desserts at college!!!! S’mores Treats

Light up a campfire tonight and bust out the chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows… and get roasting!

August 6th: National Root Beer Float Day

20130805_191946-kdcollage

Happy National Root Beer Float Day!!!! Root beer floats are classic and scream all-American. After reading multiple articles regarding the history of root beer floats, the credit seems to be given to a man named Frank Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company. Well that is a mouth full.  The initial name of the root beer float was a “black cow”. There are countless types of soda floats, but the root beer is probably the best way.

However, preparing a root beer float can be very dangerous. There is a certain technique that is to be used to ensure minimal foaming and far less of a mess. Soda before ice cream… always.

This cuts down on the foaming reacting that the ice cream creates when it meet the soda. It is a science, really. Sadly, we do not use this technique at B&F due to the fact that we have to weigh the ice cream before we add the soda. 6 oz. of soft vanilla ice cream and half a bottle of root beer just about does it. And then topped off with a tid bit of whipped cream… voilà!

 Not really 15 cents…

Here are some great ways to celebrate root beer float day… recipe time!!!!

ummm omg! Jack Daniel’s is a great addition to a classic. Also I would try Vanilla Whipped Vodka too. Adds that extra vanilla flavor.

Go out to the store and get the makings for root beer floats for the family or head down to the local ice cream parlor! Next we need a National Butterbeer Day 🙂

August 2nd: National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

20130801_220612-kdcollage

Happy National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!!! Yes! Another ice cream day!!!! God I love it! Okay. Ice cream sandwiches, classic. I don’t know about you guys, but I loved whenever we had ice cream sandwiches as kids. But, do you remember when they actually used to be a good size? Not this slimmed down things we have today. I remember that these sandwiches used to be easily twice the size it is today. And not because I was younger and had smaller hands. Like they legit used to be big.

Ice cream sandwiches are said to have originated in New York City by a food pushcart peddler in 1899 and sold for 1 cent.  It was ice cream slabbed in between two wafers and it was a huge hit because it was an alternative way to eat ice cream with your hands.

However, the possibilities with how creative you want to make your ice cream sandwiches are really endless. Today, other than the classic chocolate cake wafers that we are used to, chocolate chip cookies are used or others.

Now the really fun part… recipes!!! Hell yeah! Thanks Pinterest…
